Rescue Smoke (SpaceDock description)
Short description: Orange distress smoke for EVA Kerbals — a true volumetric plume that follows the Kerbal and bends with real weather wind.
Full description:
Rescue Smoke adds an orange distress smoke signal for EVA Kerbals. Right-click a Kerbal, toggle the smoke on, and a true volumetric raymarched plume rises from the Kerbal's backpack along the local surface normal.
Features
- Toggle on/off from the EVA part action window; the on/off state persists in the save and restores on load.
- Volumetric raymarched plume: turbulent breakup, vertical streaks, dense source and fading tail; no flat billboard smoke.
- The plume anchors to the Kerbal's backpack and follows when the Kerbal moves (smooth, throttled while standing still).
- Wind-aware: if WindUnifier, NaturalWeather/Keystone, FAR, KerbalWeatherProject, Nature's Fury or VEFX is installed, the plume leans with real wind; otherwise it uses a light default wind.
- In-game difficulty options: plume height (10–60 m) and maximum wind lean (0–90°).
- Up to 8 simultaneous plumes with automatic quality scaling, plus day/night lighting.
Dependencies
- Required: Module Manager
- Recommended: WindUnifier (unified wind), NaturalWeather/Keystone, KerbalWeatherProject, FerramAerospaceResearch, Nature's Fury
Compatibility
- KSP 1.12.x (tested on 1.12.5, Unity 2019.4.18f1)
- Works in stock aero and FAR/deferred environments.
Notes
- Vertical direction follows the local surface normal (GetUpAxis), not the KSP world y axis.
- If the volume shader bundle fails to load, the mod falls back to a simple translucent box.
